4,000 or 8,000 Watch Hours? What Changes on February 1, 2027
In August 2026 YouTube raised the Partner Program entry bar for the first time since 2018. From February 1, 2027, new applicants need 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified public watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified public Shorts views in 90 days — double both of today's thresholds.
Two things about that are widely misreported, so to be precise:
- Existing partners are grandfathered. If you are already in the Partner Program, nothing about your status changes and you will not be removed for sitting below 8,000 hours. You do have to accept the updated monetization terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027, or earnings pause until you do.
- The bar you face depends on your acceptance date, not your application date. Review typically takes about a month, so if you are aiming to get in under 4,000 hours, treat the practical cutoff as meaningfully earlier than February 1.
