Does YouTube Pay for 3,000 Watch Hours? What the 500-Subscriber Tier Unlocks

By The iamcreator.io Team · October 9, 2026

On a staircase landing, fans hand gifts to a creator at a stall, while a larger door at the top stays closed.

Not with ads. 3,000 watch hours is the bar for YouTube’s early-access tier, which opens at 500 subscribers. It lets you turn on channel memberships, Super Thanks and Shopping, so your viewers can pay you directly. Ad revenue on your videos still needs the full YouTube Partner Program bar: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours. So YouTube does pay at 3,000 hours, just through your fans rather than through ads.

What 3,000 watch hours unlocks, and what it doesn’t

YouTube runs two levels of the Partner Program. The 3,000-hour number belongs to the first one.

TierSubscribersWatch time or ShortsWhat it unlocks
Early access5003,000 valid public watch hours in the past year, or 3 million public Shorts views in 90 days, plus 3 public uploads in the last 90 daysMemberships, Super Thanks, Shopping. No ad revenue.
Full Partner Program1,0004,000 valid public watch hours in the past year (8,000 for new applicants from February 1, 2027), or 10 million Shorts views in 90 daysEverything above, plus ad revenue

Early access is not a consolation prize. For a channel with a small, loyal audience, memberships and Super Thanks can bring in real money months before the ad-revenue thresholds are in sight, and turning them on doesn’t slow you down on the way to the full program.

The full early-access requirements

To apply for early access, all of these have to be true at once:

  • 500 subscribers
  • 3 public uploads in the last 90 days
  • 3,000 valid public watch hours in the past 365 days, or 3 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days

On top of the numbers sit the same policy gates as every other path: living where the program is available, following the monetization policies, no active Community Guidelines strikes, a linked payments account and 2-Step Verification. Then YouTube reviews the channel before switching anything on. The details of every path are in the full YouTube monetization requirements.

3,000 watch hours in minutes, days and views

3,000 hours sounds abstract until you convert it. Here is what it actually takes:

  • Minutes: 3,000 × 60 = 180,000 minutes of people watching.
  • Days: 3,000 ÷ 24 = 125 days of nonstop playback.
  • Per day: 3,000 ÷ 365 = about 8.2 watch hours a day, every day for a year, across all your public long-form videos combined.

Views depend entirely on how long people stay. The formula is views = 180,000 ÷ your average view duration in minutes:

Average view durationViews for 3,000 hours
2 minutes90,000
4 minutes45,000
8 minutes22,500
12 minutes15,000
20 minutes9,000

Two channels with the same views can be months apart purely because of average view duration. The full tables for 3,000, 4,000 and 8,000 hours are in how many views 4,000 watch hours really takes.

What counts toward the 3,000 hours

Only valid public watch hours count, the same kind YouTube uses for the full program:

  • Counts: watch time on public videos longer than 60 seconds, public live streams and their public replays, and premieres, over a rolling 365 days.
  • Doesn’t count: Shorts, private or unlisted videos, deleted videos, ads and paid promotion.

That is why the number in the Earn section of YouTube Studio is often well below the total in Analytics. If yours looks lower than expected, the qualified watch hours checker shows which of your watch time is being left out. The step-by-step version is in how to check your watch hours on YouTube.

The rolling window works against you

Hours older than 365 days drop off the back of the count. A channel that reached 2,500 hours and then went quiet for a few months can watch its total fall instead of rise. Steady uploads keep new hours arriving faster than old ones expire.

Should you stop at 3,000?

Apply for early access as soon as you qualify, then keep going. The next line is 4,000 hours and 1,000 subscribers for ad revenue, and the timing matters: on February 1, 2027 the full bar for channels not yet in the program doubles to 8,000 hours. The early-access tier itself does not change. Whether your current pace clears 4,000 before the deadline is worked out in can you still hit 4,000 watch hours before February 1, 2027?

The short version

  1. 3,000 watch hours plus 500 subscribers and 3 recent uploads opens early access, not ad revenue.
  2. Early access pays through memberships, Super Thanks and Shopping.
  3. 3,000 hours is 180,000 minutes, or about 8.2 hours a day for a year.
  4. Only public long-form and live watch time counts. Shorts never do.
  5. Ad revenue needs 4,000 hours, rising to 8,000 for new applicants on February 1, 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Does YouTube pay for 3,000 watch hours?

Not with ad revenue. 3,000 valid public watch hours, together with 500 subscribers and 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, qualifies a channel to apply for YouTube's early-access tier. That tier turns on fan funding and shopping: channel memberships, Super Thanks and Shopping. Money comes from viewers through those features. Ad revenue on your videos still needs the full Partner Program bar of 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours (8,000 for new applicants from February 1, 2027) or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.

How many views is 3,000 watch hours?

3,000 watch hours is 180,000 minutes, so the views you need depend on your average view duration: 90,000 views at a 2-minute average, 45,000 at 4 minutes, 22,500 at 8 minutes, 15,000 at 12 minutes and 9,000 at 20 minutes. Divide 180,000 by your average view duration in minutes to get your own number.

How many days is 3,000 watch hours?

3,000 hours is 125 days of nonstop playback. Spread over the rolling 365-day window YouTube uses, it works out to about 8.2 watch hours per day, every day, across all your public long-form videos and live streams combined.

What does 3,000 public watch hours mean?

It means 3,000 hours of watch time on your public long-form videos, live streams and premieres over the last 365 days. Watch time from Shorts, private or unlisted videos, deleted videos, ads and paid promotion does not count, which is why the figure in the Earn section of YouTube Studio is usually lower than the total in Analytics.

What do you get at 500 subscribers and 3,000 watch hours?

The right to apply for early access to the YouTube Partner Program. If you also have 3 public uploads in the last 90 days and pass the same policy review as every other path, you can turn on channel memberships, Super Thanks and Shopping. You do not get ad revenue on your videos at this tier.

Is the 3,000-hour tier changing in 2027?

No. On February 1, 2027 the full Partner Program bar for new applicants rises to 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views, but the early-access tier keeps its current requirements: 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days, and either 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views.

Do Shorts count toward the 3,000 watch hours?

No. Shorts watch time never counts toward watch hours. Shorts have their own route into early access instead: 3 million public Shorts views in 90 days, which can replace the 3,000 hours.
